How To Make Your Eye Colour Pop

This is where the colour wheel comes in!
A colour wheel can be used for anything from redecorating your living room, coming up with new outfits or choosing a complimentary eye colour.

How to use a colour wheel:

  'Complimentary Colours'

Pick a color on the color wheel then draw a straight line across the color wheel, this is the colours complement. These colours are opposites. You can see that yellow compliments violet and vice versa.

 'Analogous Colours'

This is when you choose a colour on the  wheel that is next to the colour you are choosing. If we choose yellow the analogous colours would be yellow green and yellow orange. This works really well in decorating or fashion.

 'Triad Colours'

More detailed colour wheel

Choose a colour on the  wheel and draw a triangle to find the two other colors. You will notice that each colour has 3 colours between them to form the triangle. The primary colours of Red, Blue and Yellow are triadic colours

Now how do I make this work for my makeup!! Use a more detailed colour wheel to find your shade of eyecolour then find the colours opposite and use these as eyeshadow.

Blue Eyes
If you look at the colour wheel and look directly across and find that its complementary colour is orange now not many of us would choose to wear orange eyeshadows so try golds coppers and bronzes.

Green Eyes
Again looking at the wheel you will see that Red is opposite green so using violet colours will compliment your eyes.

Brown Eyes
Brown eyes suit blue and green shades of makeup. Particularly navy type blues and dark greys.

Remember nothing is set in stone!! Feel free to wear whatever colours your heart desires. I certainly do!

Beauty Through the Ages: Flashback Friday

1940s

1940's women were asked to do a lot, and working for the war effort took a toll. But glamour was in, fresh from Hollywood, and women who were earning their first paychecks were also shopping, dressing elegantly and more and more makeup.
"Putting on a brave face "  was expected, this encludes being optimistic and looking your best at all times.

Use gravy browning as fake tan
Blend lipstick on your cheeks for rouge
Get your friend to draw a pencil up your legs to look like you are wearing stockings
Wear bright red lipstick
Blondes use lemon in their hair, brunettes use vinegar
Coal was mixed with Vaseline for eyes
Do your own hair, you don’t need a hairdresser just some hair pins and creativity.
Use talc on your face, as a replacement for smooth f
ace powder
Pin curls and bits of torn up material to curl hair

Women were heavily recruited to join the forces. Nurses particularly were expected to look their best. This was thought to cheer up the men coming in from the front lines.

Of course they were still making movies during the war and women looked to the movie stars for inspiration. Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Veronica Lake and Vivien Leigh were some of the most famous screen stars of the 40s.

Varga Girls
The Varga girls became so popular that from 1942-1946, due to a high volume of military demand, 9 million copies of Esquire magazine-without adverts and free of charge was sent to American troops stationed overseas and in domestic bases. Nevertheless, not one picture could be as significant or memorable as the Varga Girls nose art of the WWII bombers; not seen as prostitutes but patriots for good luck

 Until Next time..

Bridal Series: Makeup

Choosing your makeup for your wedding day is crucial to some and just something that needs doing to others.
This is probably the day where you will be photographed most in your life she understandably you want to look your best. Photography can wash out the skin and make it appear as though you have no makeup on. We have all been on nights out where we look at photographs and think that it look as though we have no makeup on!! It is also important that there is very little or no SPF in your foundation as this can reflect of the flash of a camera and make your skin look white (yep! I'm sure you have noticed this in pictures too!)

There are a few thing to consider when getting your makeup done:

Time Of Year:
Bearing in mind that the weather is chronic in Ireland most of the year round you still want your makeup to reflect the time of year.

Spring
A Spring Bride want to be fresh, healthy. The air is fresh, the flowers are blooming and this is how you want to feel. Eyes are kept light and bright. Lips soft and skin dewy and fresh.

Summer
During the summer we all like to look healthy and tanned with glowing skin. We want to reflect this in the makeup. Foundation light with highlight on the cheek bone. Face is contoured with a bronzer to give definition.

Autumn
The Autumn is a stunning time to get married. The air is still warm. The trees are turning and the photographs will be amazing. Foundation is more matte. Skin is still highlight and bronzed here. Softer warmer colours are used for the eyes. Brown, bronze, muted purple and moss greens all look beautiful at this time of year.

Winter
Now there is a difference between and winter wedding and a Christmas wedding. At Christmas we can go all out. But at other times during the winter. Our skin is paler this time of year. Foundation is semi-matte, lips are rosier and blush is pinker (although is you have a tendency to get red cheeks in the chilly weather this would be adjusted)

Time of Day:

Morning Bride
If you are getting married in the morning your makeup should reflect the soft morning light and appear pretty natural. Not many brides get married in the morning in Ireland but they certainly get their makeup done at this time.
Wear a matte foundation.
Try not to wear dramatic eyeshadow and choose softer and warmer shades that also compliment your eyecolour. Your makeup artist will be able to advise you on this.
Wear a soft peach or pink blush.
Lips should also be subtle and close to your natural lip colour.

Afternoon Bride
Most Brides get married in the early afternoon. I myself got married at 1pm. If you plan on getting your pictures taken outside try to find an area where is is shades as the sun (if its shining!!!) will be directly above your head and will cast shadows. This can be very aging.
Wear a semi-matte foundation and wear as little as you can get away with.
Because the sun (hopefully!) will be high is the sky we don't want any really dark eyeshadow here as the shadow from the sun will make your eyes look like two big black holes on your face. We don't want that do we?! Eyeliner should be close to the lash line and very thin.
Because of the time of day we want everything blended blended blended! no harsh lines allowed here!

Early Evening Bride
This time of day is so beautiful to get married in. The soft golden light reflects beautifully off the face giving a stunning glow.
If our skin is less that perfect this is a great time for your wedding photographs to be taken as the soft light is a wonderful concealer!
You can get away with a little more makeup at this time of day and add a little bit of drama. Golds and browns are gorgeous at this time of day.
A richer blush is great at this time of day it really lifts the face.

Evening Bride
With more and more wedding ceremonies being held in hotels now we are finding that brides aren't getting married until the evening. This really is the time to glam it up!
Anything goes for the evening! Be as brave as you like! But........bear in mind that all photographs will be taken with a flash!

Theme and Colour Scheme of your Wedding:

The theme/colour scheme of the wedding is probably 1st on your agenda. We even choose our venues to suit the theme of our weddings.

Retro and Vintage Weddings are in!
Many, many brides are now going for a 40s or 50s theme. With shorter cocktail length dresses, Bright red lips and a feline flick of eyeliner!

Garden Party Theme
This alice in wonderland tea party theme is hugely popular for Spring/Summer Weddings. Brides like to suit their makeup to this theme with rose lips and soft greens and purples on their eyes.

Modern
Modern weddings tend to be monochrome with a pop of colour. Your venue is slick, trendy with glass and
mirrors and maybe has a pop of colour with the flowers on the tables. You might want to reflect this in your makeup maybe with a bright lip or alternative eyeshadow.

Christmas
At christmas pretty much anything goes! Christmas is a fun time and a great time to be a little different with your makeup.

Your Personality
Your makeup should always match your personality regardless of the time of day, month of the year or theme of your wedding. If you have a loud personality then you probably wear daring makeup and your wedding will in no doubt reflect this. There is no point in wearing soft makeup if it isn't going to match you or your day.

This is true for a quieter personality too. If you tend to wear simple or no makeup at all then there is no point sporting lashings of lashes and red lips when you will probably just feel uncomfortable and give yourself a fright every time you pass a mirror!

There are thousands of magazines, websites and images online to get inspired by. Keep the pictures that appeal to you.

*Remember*
Wear what is comfortable to you.
Take advice from the professional
Always get a trial done.
Have an idea of what you want before your trial so you can tell your makeup artist. You could bring some images with you also.
We cant make you look like somebody. We all want Angelina's lips but unfortunatly that requires surgery for most of us! but we can do a makeup inspired by someone.

Until next time!
