Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag

Okay, I know its only January but trust me before you know it, it will be summer! So we must do as my darling mother says "Tidy our Minds" Which generally means get set and organised! This is the time of year when all the cosmetic houses and brands in your pharmacies release their spring/summer makeup range. Its the perfect time to get your items before they run out!

First things first! We need to do a little clean out of our makeup bag, handbag, drawer in the bathroom, glove box, down the side of the couch or where ever else you could be stashing your makeup! We need to decide what needs to go and what we want to add to our collection.

We all have read articles in magazines etc about having to replace certain items in our makeup bag regularly, but do we listen? Probably not! Ask any lady how often she should replace her mascara and she would probably know but is guilty of hanging on  to it for longer.

Look Familiar?

So how often should we replace items in our makeup bag?

Mascara and Eyeliner
You may have heard this one before, but things like mascara and eyeliner need to be thrown out after a certain period of time. It is recommended that you keep your mascara for about 3-4 months. Because you’re using the same wand on your lashes every day, and simply can’t clean it, the chance of getting an eye infection is high if you don’t replace the product every season. The same applies to eyeliners: if they’re being used on your bottom lash line regularly, they might be spreading bacteria near your eyes. There are always new mascaras on the market, claiming to do all these wonderful things for your lashes, use this as an excuse to try out a new brand. You might just find the 'one'!

Foundation and Concealer
This is an easy one! It is recommended that you replace your foundation once a year. Most of us go through more than one foundation in a year anyway! If you use a different foundation for evening and day of winter and summer make sure these are not over a year old.

Lipstick and Lip glosses
I would say that if you are careful with your lipsticks and sanitise them regularly with a spritz of alcohol spray (make sure the spray is at least 70% so it evaporates off) that you should get 2-3 years from your lipstick. Also be aware that if you have any cold-sores that you use a brush to apply it and be extra careful, you dont want that sucker back as soon as it has healed!

Eyeshadow and other powders
Lucky for us these last longer.  As long as you’re using a clean brush and spritz them with an alcohol spray, shadows will basically last until you're done with them.

You can buy specialist sanitiser sprays for cosmetic from sites online like Beauty So Clean but I just make my own. I get alcohol form the chemist and put it in a spray bottle! Much cheaper!

Now for the fun bit!! We get to go shopping!! Yay!
